Because of the recently discovered sub-variant JN.1, the number of COVID-19 cases across the nation is on the rise. The Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday that India recorded 529 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases to 4,093. This comes after a prior decline in daily instances till December 5. The introduction of the JN.1 variety and the cold weather are associated with an increase in instances.
How risky is JN.1 and what does it entail?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated JN.1 as a variation of interest that is different from its parent lineage BA.2.86. According to available data, the WHO emphasizes that there is a minimal overall risk associated with JN.1, although further monitoring is necessary.
In addition, the WHO advised everyone to take precautions, declaring that “the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, change, and circulate in all countries globally.” Even while the available data indicates that JN.1 poses little additional risk to public health, we still need to monitor the viruses’ evolution in order to adjust our reaction.
There were 40 further instances of the JN.1 sub-variant reported as of December 26, bringing the total number of cases nationwide to 109. With 36 cases in Gujarat, 34 in Karnataka, 14 in Goa, and other instances dispersed throughout several states, the bulk of patients are in home isolation.
Indian government’s response and guidelines-
Prior to the holiday season, Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant emphasized the importance of crucial COVID-19 control and management techniques in a letter to states and Union territories last week.
States were asked to put public health measures into place, follow updated surveillance recommendations, and keep an eye on district-level instances of severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI).
Dr. VK Paul, a member of NITI Aayog’s Health committee, emphasized the ongoing research being done on the new variation and urged the states to improve testing and fortify surveillance measures.
Officials confirmed that 92 percent of affected individuals are choosing home-based treatment, indicating minimal disease, despite the increasing number of cases. Furthermore, hospitalization rates have not risen appreciably.
COVID-19 patients can now be accommodated in special beds at central government-run facilities in Delhi, such as Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS, and Lady Hardinge Medical College.
Earlier, Dr. Randeep Guleria, the previous director of AIIMS Delhi, stated, “Viral and respiratory infections will become more common during this season.” Whether it’s COVID, RSV, influenza, or another viral infection, we encounter them annually. And both the crowds and the temperature are to blame for that.”
People travel throughout the holidays, which means they’ll bring the virus with them. There are crowds, and a lot of them stay indoors due to the cold, which encourages the spread of infections that affect various people in different ways. Thus, in order to prevent the infection from spreading to others, I would say that the most important thing we can do is practice COVID-19 proper behavior, such as frequently washing your hands after a cold or cough,” he continued.
